Fellow disaster researchers I offer some hope--major outlet news coverage of the compound pandemic-hurricane-wildfire-social justice disaster seems to have absorbed some of our core conceptual premises and empirical findings!
2. Weather events and climate change are causally linked. https://www.npr.org/2020/08/28/905622947/everything-is-unprecedented-welcome-to-your-hotter-earth">https://www.npr.org/2020/08/2...
3. "Natural disaster" is a highly misleading phrase and should be banished. https://www.newyorker.com/books/under-review/why-hurricane-katrina-was-not-a-natural-disaster">https://www.newyorker.com/books/und...
4. Disasters reveal the inequalities in society. Disasters ALSO PRODUCE INEQUALITIES in society. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/15/world/europe/coronavirus-inequality.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/1...
5. Structural racism makes disasters worse. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/05/08/what-white-americans-can-learn-about-racism-coronavirus/">https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/20...
6. Fundamental "lessons of disaster" can& #39;t be learned if we leave it to the political structures we have in place now. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/30/world/asia/south-korea-warehouse-fire.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/3...
7. FEMA is set up to fail, and should not be in DHS! https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/fema-admits-failures-in-puerto-rico-disaster-response-in-new-after-action-report/2018/07/12/b7900228-8636-11e8-9e80-403a221946a7_story.html">https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/...
8.Just a start, thoroughly unscientific. But, I& #39;m feeling slightly hopeful on a Saturday morning after surviving the GOP convention. I read everything I can on disaster in mainstream media & it seems like there HAS been a shift towards more critical thinking about disasters.
9. I am now prepared to receive your corrections to my optimism. But also feel free to add links to articles that ARE starting to get it right on disasters as processes, disasters as politics, disasters as revelations of a broken world. /end
