/2 #Premchand, b. DhanpatRaiShrivastav in Benaras, #Awadh(1880), started his literary career writing in Urdu as & #39;Nawab Rai& #39;. His coll. of short stories Soz-e Watan(1908) was deemed seditious by the British & was told to burn it. He switched to & #39;Premchand& #39; partly 2 avoid scrutiny
#Premchand was the 1st President of the All India Progressive Writers Association in #Lucknow in 1936. The PWA was estab. in London (1935) by Sajjad Zaheer (& others) who took it to India. The first session at #RifaEAam club, Lko was attended by several literary icons.
