I don’t talk a lot about what I do for a job, because when you’re a public servant you don’t usually give details about that - we deal with information that effects a lot of people’s lives and we trust our comms colleagues to get those messages out effectively and honestly (1/8)
Right now it‘s harder than usual not to talk about it. My department is working on huge pieces of work. Hours of collaboration are being put in from some of the smartest people you will ever meet. We all want good options and the best data to be provided to government (2/8)
These decisions will touch our friends and family, but also total strangers. People whose lives are similar to our personal experiences and people we have to listen to very carefully so their viewpoints aren’t lost. People don’t and won’t experience this crisis the same way (3/8)
And of course we see the reckons from folk. I have been in the public service for a decade (which is not very long, honestly!) and it is vanishingly rare that someone’s perfect idea to Solve This Problem has not already been considered - its values and caveats analysed (4/8)
I don’t think those reckons should necessarily stop - my view as a person is not the same thing as my view as someone who needs to look at the angles of civil service decisions and provide good advice. But I do want to say something to my colleagues across New Zealand (5/8)
Thank you so much. I’m so concerned for my family and community. Knowing public servants are working so hard, giving so much of yourselves, gives me hope. I promise it’s not unnoticed, I promise I know that you’re not just doing your best, you’re trying to do what’s right (6/8)
I’m grateful I get to work with incredible people every day, that I’ve been able to contribute in my own ways to making this work. I wanted to recognise that we maybe don’t see all the public servants who are behind the scenes but they are absolutely there (7/8)
Kia ora to you. Kia kaha to you. The spirit of the public service may be something we (gently) joke about but it truly exists. I look forward to continuing to work with you all for our country - this afternoon and into the future.
