Orang asal (meaning "original people") is the collective term for the indigenous people of Malaysia, while orang asli is used specifically for the tribes of peninsular Malaysia. The orang asli were historically known by other names like sakai (meaning slave) but uh that won& #39;t fly

The orang asli are not one single group. There are many tribes, but they can be divided into three categories. The earliest is the Semang, who the Europeans referred to as Negritos meaning "little blacks". Let& #39;s try to phase out this word OK?
Due to their negroid-like features, they were (and sometimes still are) assumed to be of African descent but the similarity is only superficial. The second and most numerous group are the Senoi. They& #39;re what usually comes to mind when we imagine the orang asli. The Mah Meri are a well known example, known for their woodcarvings, their nipah weaving, and their clothes made from beaten tree bark
The Senoi Praaq unit is the pride of PDRM, made up of orang asli known for their skill in tracking
The third and final group to arrive are who the colonists called Proto-Malays (Melayu Asli). Of all the orang asli, they& #39;re the most similar to Malays in physical appearance and language. Examples include the Jakun and Temuan
Of these three groups, only the Proto-Malays speak Austronesian languages. The Semang and Senoi languages come from the Aslian branch of the Austroasiatic family, to which Khmer and Vietnamese belong
What this means is that the majority of orang asli (other than the Proto-Malays) do not fit any definition of "Malay". Neither the Semang nor Senoi are Austronesian, and the Semang didn& #39;t even come under Blumenbach& #39;s "brown race" category
I& #39;ve explained numerous times that the Malay race concept was created by the European colonists, but even they didn& #39;t consider all the orang asli Malay. Proto-Malays were often called "heathen Malay tribes", but Senoi and Semang were usually not

The Semang, as previously stated, were considered "black". The Senoi were categorised as Melanesians. This term has no relation to Melayu but comes from the Greek "melas", also meaning black

Even the word Proto-Malay itself, though it does have a linguistic and genetic basis, was also a colonial term. Proto-Malay communities have always viewed their tribal group as their identity, and they still do. No Jakun or Temuan would call themselves Malay
No matter how broadly one defines the term "Malay" it simply does not include the orang asli. This makes their very existence an inconvenience and embarrassment to ethno-nationalists. The response has been assimilation

Nobody bothers to ask the question, what do they want. Not what you think is best for them, but ideally what do the orang asli actually want. Because for most of them, they& #39;d just like to be left to decide for themselves
